Produce Show success!

The annual Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show held in the Village Hall on 31 August was a great success. Dozens of people entered horticultural, floral, baking and hobby items in an attempt to win the various category competitions and walk off with a trophy.

This year the entries were excellent and it was obvious that a lot of time and energy had gone into the growing of produce and making of a wide range of things, from baking to paintings and jams to textile items.

Congratulations to Doug Allan who won the horticultural trophy and to Doug and Peter Lowe who each had eleven individual class wins. They’ll share the trophy presented for winning the most first prizes. Peter Lowe was second in the horticultural category and David Bowman was third.

In the baking and preserves section Fiorella Shepherd was successful for the second year running. Her cake was spectacularly decorated and her other entries ensured that she walked away with another well-deserved win.

The floral trophy was taken Cath Towers, who created an amazing flower arrangement around an old typewriter.

There were more entries than ever in the hobbies category this year. The display included a wide range of artwork – oils, water colours and sketches – along with embroidered, knitted and crocheted items and many other handicrafts. The category winner was Heather Holt with her fantastic bee and honeycomb knitted blanket.

There were lots of entries in the children's section. There’s no trophy in this category but plenty of children went away happy with certificates and sweets.

Entry fees, raffle takings and money raised on the refreshments counter totalled £356.30, which will go towards supporting and maintaining our village hall.

Events like our Produce Show wouldn’t happen if volunteers didn’t get involved to make it work. A big thank you to Show Secretary Judith Lowe, helpers who set up and cleared the hall, those who served refreshments… but most of all those who took the time to enter their items in the show, those who were judges and all those who came along on the day. Congratulations to all the winners and we’ll see you next year.

2024 Produce Show - Full Details And Rules

2023 Show

Despite worries about the erratic weather during this year’s growing season, the range and quality of produce on show at the Topcliffe & Asenby Produce Show at the Village Hall on 2 September was amazing.

There was a stunning array of produce across all categories. A large crowd visited the show and mingled among the many horticultural and other exhibits, had a cup of tea and chatted with competitors, friends and neighbours.

Well done to Asenby resident Peter Lowe who was the overall winner in the horticultural section, and also the winner of the most ‘firsts’, with 15 category wins.

Other trophy winners were:

  • Hobbies – Julie Hunt
  • Floral – Karen Hargreaves
  • Baking – Fiorella Shepherd

There were very few entries from children, but well done to those that did enter.

A big thank you to Show Secretary, Judith Lowe, and all the other volunteers who make the show possible.
